Stop Me If You’ve Heard the Excuse About a Slow Economy

"The 'slow economy' has become the greatest tool for hiding or escaping just about anything," says sales trainer Greg Bennett (gregbennett.blogs.com)

"In the past two months, I personally have used the excuse 'It's a bad economy' to accomplish the following: Avoid salespeople trying to prospect me; Negotiate better rates from sellers trying to close me; Renegotiate better terms from vendors; Get out of lousy deals I had gotten into; Delay payments I was required to make. And the topper is the economy isn't hurting me at all. It's just a really good tool to use to cover, hide, escape, hammer, twist, prolong and avoid anything we want to avoid."

The most dangerous thing about it is clients feel they can use it without the fear of conflict. But that's only because the salespeople on the other end are resigned to it, Bennett says. They hear "bad economy" and they go away.

"When your salespeople hear 'bad economy,' they need to internally flip the switch and think 'THAT'S exactly why you need me!' Then they begin to question: 'Can you tell me more about this bad economy?'"
