Price Isn’t the Problem

There is a common misconception in sales that when a deal is lost it’s because the buyer made the purchasing decision primarily based upon price.  But if everyone based their buying decision solely on price, the highways would be jammed with Hyundais, says Lee Salz, author of Soar Despite Your Dodo Sales Manager (WBusiness Books, 2007).

When a sale is lost on price, it actually means that the value portrayed did not justify the price delta.  The key is to lead each prospect to your “area of differentiation” – the unique attributes that are offered beyond commodity.  It’s not easy to find the area of differentiation in a mature marketplace.  Begin by analyzing what you offer that your competitors do not.  You must help the prospect see your solution as unique.  The good news is that people are willing to pay more if they believe they have found uniqueness.
