Stop Slashing Price and Start Adding Value

When down markets make sales tougher to come by, slashing price often is a knee-jerk response. There is a better way to add value while not giving away profits, says sales consultant Art Sobczak.

A dollar in cash money or credit that your salespeople give away is always a dollar of lost profit, but those same customers’ perception of the value of something other than money that’s given away can be greater than the price tag.

Example: A printer who missed a deadline for an order apologized and then recovered by running 20 percent more than the order for free. The printer also offered to add a single color to the next black-and-white order at no charge.

The printer likely didn’t affect her bottom line and cleverly encouraged repeat business by offering a second color for free on the next order. Instead of dropping price, allow your salespeople to throw in additional products that customers are not currently using, Sobczak advises. It gives them the opportunity to test something out, which could lead to future sales of that product.
