The Value of a Rejection

Top salespeople always track their closing ratios, says Jim Klein, a Rochester, N.Y.-based sales trainer (www.FromtheHeartSalesTraining.com). That way, if they see negative changes in the closing ratio, they become aware of challenges that need to be addressed immediately.

What’s more, tracking close ratios allows salespeople to feel like they’re getting paid for unsuccessful sales calls. If a salesperson’s close ratio is 1-to-10 and a successful sales call nets him $500, then each of the 10 sales calls on the road to one close is worth $50.

“Top salespeople look at the value of the activity as well as the result,” Klein explains. “If they place a dollar value on prospecting and rejection as an activity, they will look forward to them. If they look at getting paid for each contact instead of each sale, they will see rejection in a whole new way.”
